How Do Teens Communicate? [Marketing Infographic]

by Robert Tyson

OK, so these stats showing that email is still the most-used communication channel amongst teenagers (even beating Facebook) are admittedly from email marketing firm AWeber (who I use myself and do recommend by the way – note that is an affiliate link).

They also – as a reader kindly pointed out to me – inexplicably seem to have left Twitter out of their survey.

BUT they do nevertheless add to the evidence that email is STILL the ‘killer app’ in online marketing…

    Hi Robert,

    Interesting infographic!

Although I do think, as you pointed out, they left off Twitter, which would completely change those numbers.

From the teens I know, Twitter is fast becoming the place they hang out. Most don’t even “hang out” on Facebook nearly as much as they used to – the hot spot is Twitter.

Of course, that’s not research, just my own observation among the young people I know.

What’s not surprising however, is the phone usage – where would they, or anyone else for that matter, be without their phones?!

Thanks for your comment Christine. I must admit I don’t know too many teenagers these days(!) so what you say about Twitter is interesting.

Obviously AWeber is not disinterested in the outcome of research like this so we have to bear that in mind.

But the more I think about it, the more I feel that email could still be THE online communication medium for decades, even if ultimately it transmogrifies into something with a different name, because we need something with it’s unique combination of features.

I think its interesting data. But its data made by an email marketing firm and therefore may contain certain biases. So it should be seen just as that: interesting data from an email marketing company.

      Cheers Luis – agreed.
